Before you travel

Kenya entry requirements (eTA)

Kenya replaced traditional visas with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). Most visitors from outside Africa need to apply online before travel. Requirements can change — always confirm on the official portal.

Who needs an eTA?

Citizens of most countries outside Africa (including USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, India, China, etc.) must obtain an eTA before departure.

Many African nationals (most AU member states) and East African Community citizens are exempt and can enter with a valid passport only.

Key details

  • Official portal: etakenya.go.ke
  • Typical fee: around USD 30–35 (single entry)
  • Validity: 90 days from issue (enter Kenya within that window)
  • Passport must be valid 6+ months beyond arrival

Processing time:

  • Standard: usually 1–3 business days (official window up to 72 hours / 3 working days)
  • Peak seasons (Jul–Oct, Dec–Jan): can stretch longer — apply at least 2 weeks ahead
  • Expedited option: available on the portal for faster (sometimes same-day) processing at an extra fee
  • Recommendation: submit at least 7–14 days before your flight

How to apply (official process)

  1. Go to the official site: etakenya.go.ke (avoid third-party sites that add extra fees).
  2. Create an account and complete the form with passport details.
  3. Upload a passport photo / selfie and passport bio page.
  4. Provide travel dates and accommodation details (we can supply your safari camp confirmation).
  5. Pay the fee by card and wait for the approval email (usually within 1–3 business days).
  6. Print the eTA approval and carry it with your passport.

Yellow fever: A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from (or have recently visited) a yellow-fever endemic country.

Health insurance: Kenya has introduced requirements for travel health insurance meeting minimum coverage levels. Upload proof during the eTA process if requested, or check current rules on the official portal.
