ADVENTURE · 4–6 DAYS · MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK

Mount Kenya summit trek

From $980 / person

Mount Kenya has a well-established network of hiking trails that approach the peaks from different sides of the mountain. Most trekkers aim for Point Lenana (4,985 m) — the highest non-technical summit.

We specialise in the classic Sirimon–Chogoria traverse, widely regarded as the best balance of gradual acclimatisation and spectacular scenery.

Main trail networks

NORTH-WEST · MOST RECOMMENDED FOR ASCENT

Sirimon Route

Starts at Sirimon Gate (≈2,650 m) near Nanyuki. Gradual gradient, generally drier weather, and excellent acclimatisation profile. Camps include Old Moses and Shipton’s Camp.

  • Typical duration: 4–5 days
  • Best for: first-time high-altitude trekkers
  • Key camps: Old Moses (3,300 m) → Shipton’s (4,200 m)
EAST · MOST SCENIC DESCENT

Chogoria Route

Approaches from the eastern side via Chogoria town. Famous for Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson, Lake Ellis, Hall Tarns and dramatic cliffs. Often used as the descent after summiting via Sirimon.

  • Typical duration: 4–5 days (or combined)
  • Best for: scenery, photography, experienced hikers
  • Highlights: alpine lakes, waterfalls, Gorges Valley
WEST · FASTEST BUT STEEPER

Naro Moru Route

The most direct and popular with some operators. Shorter overall distance but steeper, including the well-known “Vertical Bog” section. Good when time is limited and you are already well acclimatised.

  • Typical duration: 3–4 days
  • Best for: time-pressed, experienced trekkers
  • Note: higher altitude-sickness risk due to faster gain

Permit & booking process

All Mount Kenya National Park entry is handled through the official Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) eCitizen system. When you book with us we take care of the permits for you.

What is required

How we handle it for you

  1. You confirm dates and group size with us.
  2. We prepare the eCitizen application (or process it at the gate where allowed) using your passport details.
  3. Park fees and camping are paid and included in your invoice.
  4. You receive confirmation and we meet you with all documentation ready.
  5. At the gate (Sirimon, Naro Moru or Chogoria) the QR-coded permit is scanned and you are registered in and out of the park.

Processing time: eCitizen park permits are usually generated immediately or within a few hours after successful payment. Hut/camp space in peak season (Jul–Oct, Jan–Feb) should be secured weeks in advance through your operator. We handle the full process once dates are confirmed.

Independent travellers can also book directly via kws.ecitizen.go.ke or kwspay.ecitizen.go.ke, but using a licensed operator is simpler and ensures guide registration and hut availability.
